About PotholeUK

A free, independent resource helping UK road users understand their legal rights and take action on pothole damage.

Who We Are

We are a small app and software development firm from Leeds, based at Non Go By Farm, going by the name of QuantumPivot LTD. You can find out more about us and our work at quantumpivot.dev.

Why This Website Exists

UK roads are in crisis. The Asphalt Industry Alliance estimates that the backlog of local road repairs would take over a decade to clear. The RAC reports that pothole-related breakdowns remain at near-record levels. Vehicle damage from poor road surfaces costs UK drivers billions of pounds every year.

Despite this, most drivers don’t know their rights. They don’t know that councils have a legal duty to maintain highways. They don’t know how to make a compensation claim. They don’t know what evidence they need or how to report a pothole in a way that actually gets it fixed.

That information gap is what PotholeUK exists to close. Clear, practical, free information for everyone who uses UK roads.

Our Mission

To empower UK road users with clear, accessible information about their legal rights regarding pothole damage. We believe that when people understand the law and know the process, they can hold highway authorities accountable and get the outcomes they deserve.

We cover the Highways Act 1980, the section 58 defence, how compensation claims work, how to report effectively, and how to gather evidence that holds up. Everything is written in plain English, not legal jargon.

Independence

Independent & Unaffiliated

PotholeUK is not affiliated with any council, government body, insurance company, or legal firm. We do not accept payment or incentives from any organisation that handles pothole claims or road maintenance. This is an independent, community-first resource built to serve road users, not institutions.

What We Don’t Do

Transparency matters. Here is what falls outside our scope:

  • We do not provide legal advice. The information on this site is general guidance, not a substitute for qualified legal counsel.

  • We do not represent you in claims. If you need legal representation, consult a solicitor.

  • We do not guarantee outcomes. Every case is different, and success depends on the specific circumstances and evidence.

  • We do not process or handle claims on your behalf. We point you to the right channels, but the process is yours to manage.

Our Values

Plain English

No legal jargon, no complicated language. Every guide is written so anyone can understand it.

Factual & Neutral

We present the law and the process as they are. We do not exaggerate, scaremonger, or take sides.

Free for Everyone

All information on this website is free to access. There are no paywalls, premium tiers, or hidden costs.

Accessible to All

We design for accessibility first. Our content works for everyone, regardless of ability or device.

Get Involved

The most impactful thing you can do is share this resource with someone who needs it. If you’ve hit a pothole, chances are your neighbours, colleagues, or family members have too.

We’re also building a free mobile app that will make reporting and documenting potholes faster and easier than ever.
